Concerning religion, Japanese people have no problems mixing religions, they will hold a marriage ceremony in the form of Shintoism or Christianity, and a funeral service in Buddhism. However, most of Japanese people are not concerned with any religion in their usual lives.
It looks like that Europeans or Americans consider for instance Arab Islamic soceity belonging to a different cultural sphere.
